The village of Mansfield has been known to celebrate some of the good things of life, like the earlier festival of mushrooms during the last few weeks of the month of April. But this time, during the fall months of September, they celebrate another food classic in a simple festival dedicated to its no-nonsense approach, versatility and timelessness; the simple cornbread. Welcome to the Mansfield Village Cornbread Festival.

The air is very fragrant during the time of the festival’s peak. Autumn leaves add a sweet, earthy scent, the aroma of kettles full of ham and beans, chili, stews and freshly baked cornbread all mix and amble together to create a buffet of scents to the air.

A small parade follows through the twists and turns of the town, hailing the start of the cornbread festival. 2006 was a good year that had included chili and cornbread cook offs (the two seem to be in an eternal twist like the embodiment of yin and yang). Family recipes and trade secrets are lavished and used, each contestant aiming to best the other. Pumpkin, squash, berries and all other fall favorites make an appearance as well.

The yearly Mansfield Village Roller RV Rally also makes its due appearance during the festival. Rovers across the state and across the country gather around the area to compete in this once-a-year event. Early visitors who make reservations before could have their choice of camping sites and lawn seats, so its a good idea to let yourself be known if you dont want the hassle of an overcrowded stand. The prize is hefty, with the rewards going up for cash prizes and trophies. Another company, Dana Auction Company is also holding a yearly get together for some of the top bidders in Hilltop Farm to sell off a nice curio.

If you are the type who just wants to keep himself busy in his vacation and either has wanderlust, then Mansfield would still be a great place to stay. Rustic village shops are open for the generic tourist, especially those looking for a great souvenir to bring back. Nature is definitely not left out of the list. You could take the scenic route, cross a creek, reminisce over wooden bridges, or just plain hike it out and see the wonders around the area. Its like a good mix of man and nature.
