Women’s Travel Tours: Who Goes On These?
May 18, 2009 | Leave a Comment
Over the past few years, women’s travel has continued to grow as an increasingly popular niche within the travel industry. Increasing numbers of women are joining tours specifically designed for the ladies. But exactly who does this, and why?
For many singles, traveling in groups is easier, safer, and more enjoyable than traveling completely unaccompanied. It’s no wonder, when you consider that there are now more single than married women for the first time in US history. Many of these women want to travel, and they choose not to let the lack of a partner stop them. Of course, they could simply travel alone. But, many people just aren’t comfortable or don’t have fun traveling solo. Besides, if you break out laughing all alone at a table for one, people might think you’re rather strange!
Single women. If you’ve ever been a single woman at an event with mostly couples, then you know how alienating in can feel to be the odd woman out. On the other hand, perhaps you don’t want to meet Larry from Sheboygan on a singles cruise either. You’re not looking for your soul mate; you just want to enjoy a fun vacation!
Married women. A lot of times, couples just don’t have the same ideas about what constitutes a fun vacation. Maybe you dream of Italy, while he is wistfully thinking of a date with…his fishing rod. Not to worry, you can head off to Italy to enjoy Michelangelo’s David, while he fixes his admiring gaze on a halibut.
Divorced women. If you don’t have a husband to join you on your travels, this is no reason to stay home! In fact, the opposite is true. Many times, women find that during their married years they’ve largely gone along with what their husband wanted. Now that they’re single, they finally feel free to do thing they’ve been looking forward to. Here I come, Greek Islands!
Widows. Regardless of how wonderful or difficult your marriage may have been, you’ll need to start fresh with a life on your own. Traveling the world with a group of women is a great way to enjoy new sights and gain fresh perspective on life. Of course, you could always travel with your niece. But sometimes it helps to gain some distance from your family; besides, you’d probably end up paying her way anyway…
Girlfriend getaways. Get together with a group of your female friends and take a ladies-only trip where you can all relax and enjoy one another’s company. This is a great way to be able to let your hair down and enjoy some female bonding time. You can have some great heart to heart girlfriend talks, or just laugh and have fun!
Distant friends. Perhaps your sister lives across the country, but you stay in touch and spend a few days together whenever you can. Or, maybe you meet up with your best buddies from college each summer. These kinds of tours are great for keeping these important friendships going.
Moms and daughters. If you want to see your mom in a different light, there’s nothing like taking a mother daughter trip together. You’ll find that you see an entirely different side of her when she’s not meeting everyone else’s needs at a family gathering. My mom came with me to Costa Rica, and I enjoyed seeing just how adventurous she could be.
The girls. Maybe you see each all the time; you live in the same town, after all. That doesn’t mean you can’t sneak away for a couple of days. Leave the kids and husbands at home while you pamper yourselves with a spa weekend. You’ll come back feeling refreshed, and not only from the hot rock massage!
In short, a women’s trip is an entirely different atmosphere. You can enjoy girlfriend conversations, without an ambiance of competition.
Our kayaking guide remarked that women’s groups are great, but couples? Sometimes they’re supposed to be enjoying the kayaking, but instead they argue the whole way. Why bother with that? Maybe you’re ready for a women’s tour!
