The Skinniest City In the U.S.

Few towns can claim being the birthplace of a cultural icon. That distinction falls upon the quaint town of Roseville, California. Molly Kathleen Ringwald was born in Roseville, California on February 18, 1968, and teen-based movies have never been the same since. How is to say that life in this scenic suburb of Sacramento did not shape Mrs. Ringwald’s perfect pout?
It may be unfair to place too much emphasis on the place of one’s birth, but the proliferation of shopping malls in Roseville would give any young actress aspiring to play a shop-a-holic, spoiled teen an edge. Spoiled may be overstating it, but nonetheless, residents in Roseville love to shop and it shows. Recently, the mall-magnate Westfield made a $270 million investment towards expanding the Westfield Galleria. When people in Sacramento want to shop, they tend to end up in Roseville.
In contrast to its reputation for merchandising, the two principal employers in Roseville are Hewlett-Packard and Kaiser Permanente respectively. The Union Pacific Railroad is also one of principal employers in the town as Roseville is a stop along the Capitol Corridor. The presence of such high-end retail outlets as Tiffanys & Co., Apple Computers, and MAC Cosmetics makes the town the de facto shopping destination for the entire Sacramento metropolitan area.
The combination of all these malls and merchants has significantly contributed to the wealth of sales tax the city and county receive. These taxes are then re-invested in the town’s infrastructure, making it one of the cleanest, best cared for suburbs of the capitol. This, then, has translated into a great many people interested in settling down in sunny Roseville.
Roseville is currently home to more than 22,000 families. With more than 100,000 residents in total, this has made for a predominantly residential atmosphere. People move to Roseville to raise families and businesses move to Roseville to make a profit and all is well. In a 2006 study, CNN Money ranked Roseville as the skinniest city the United States, with the average body mass index being 24. No wonder it produced Molly.
