When you come over to beautiful Anglesey island you may come across Rhosneigr, a seaside resort on the south west coast. This corner of the island has some fantastic sandy beaches and coastal views, and is popular with surfers and walkers. The general consensus is that this village on the soft, gentle southern coastal strip has seen big changes over recent years. Rhosneigr has most certainly rediscovered its former energy and appeal as a quaint seaside location providing a broad choice of self-catering holiday properties.
However, don’t feel that you need to bring absolutely everything with you when you choose to visit the island, whether by car or train. So before you get here, you want to know what the area offers in terms of services and facilities, such as restaurants, cafes and shops. Not only do we have big supermarkets we have plenty of country shops and post offices that will sell you everything, from stamps to swimming costumes to chocolate bars.
A look at the services on offer to you during your stay at Rhosneigr will reassure you that the resort and its beaches are suitable. Firstly, for those coming to the island by road the nearest petrol station is in Gwalchmai village on the old A5 road. To get there take the A4080 back to the A55 expressway, go through Engedi and cross over the dual carriageway to the A5 Junction.
Rail travellers to Anglesey will be pleased to know you can stop at Rhosneigr station, and then it can take a quarter of an hour to reach the village on foot. As you walk along the road to the right is the local golf course and Anglesey Airport with caravan parks on your left. There is a stopping train across the island and it may be best to change at Bangor, unless you want to end up in Holyhead Port.
Now let’s turn to the local shops, cafes and restaurants. Firstly, you will find the Post Office positioned very prominently in the village square, and it also has a Spar Grocery with a range of food and house provisions on sale. The Bali Hi Chip Shop makes some excellent fish and chips and fishcakes in the area, and is worth a visit if you like this form of fast food. Also on the High Street is Bee-Bees cafe, a quaint, little cafe serving satisfying meals, strange sweeties and some of the most exquisite multi-flavored ice-creams on Anglesey.
Sullivans Restaurant, also on the Main Street, offers teas, coffees, light snacks and meals, perfect if you’ve been out surfing or sailing all morning. There is also a Launderette at the back, open 6 days a week between 9 am and 6 pm. Just off the main street is the Glan Neigr Pub, which serves food from as early as 7 o’clock onwards. So you could go for a brisk early morning walk across the wide sandy beaches and return for a full English breakfast. You could try Sandy’s Bistro, a fully licensed outlet open all year round, and offering fresh local lobster and fish, as well as Welsh beef and fresh local produce. Near the village square is Tafarn Y Morfa, a pub offering traditional ales and home-made food.
The village has some interesting clothes stores and on the village square, opposite the convenience store you will find Fat Face, selling designer clothes and accessories. Meanwhile near the entrance to the beach is The Funsport Shop, the place to go if you’re keen on learning to windsurf or kite-surf or to get accessories. Now if you are partial to pastries, crepes and savoury galettes, then don’t forget to pay a visit to Mojo’s, the village bakery and creperie, where you can enjoy a continental style breakfast.
The above offers a preview of the wide range of services on offer during your holiday break in Rhosneigr on Anglesey. Hopefully, this information can help make your stay at this impressive coastal resort a more enjoyable experience. Remember you can enjoy the nearby coastal path during any season of the year and there is a wide range of suitable accommodation, both self-catering and serviced, to chose from.
