Fully Understanding Your Car Rental Agreement
November 9, 2009 | Leave a Comment
Renting a car seems like a simple task. You call around or look on the web and find the best deal. Comparing prices is made simple using this method. Just because you get the best base rate quote from one car rental agency over another does not in fact mean that you are getting the best overall deal.
When you receive quotes from rental companies they are giving you a base rate. This price does not include any taxes or surcharges. You should also know that the taxes and surcharges are different depending on where you rent your car from. The Budget near your hotel may have a lower surcharge then the one at the airport, as the airport rental service is more convenient. There are also areas that charge a luxury tax which is added on to the base rate of your rental.
On top of the taxes and surcharges there are also the charges for mileage. Most car rental agreements come with an allotted amount of miles per rental period or week. If you happen to go over these miles then there will be extra charges added to your bill. If you have a choice, I would recommended you pay the few extra dollars up front for the unlimited mileage. This may seem like a non essential aspect to your rental but the amount that you will pay for unlimited mileage will save you much more should you not take it and go over the allotted miles. You will also have a more relaxing trip by not having to worry how far you are traveling and not going over the miles.
Then there is the rental insurance that will be offered. This is not mandatory and in fact most of the time your personal car insurance will cover your even in a rental. Before leaving for your trip check with your insurance company to see if you will be covered and if you are you can then feel comfortable passing on the rental insurance that the company will offer when you go to pick up your vehicle. This can save you a lot of money on your car rental, if you do not need to take out the additional renters insurance.
These are just some of the ways that a car rental company will try to make extra money off of your rental. That is why it is extremely important to read through your car rental agreement before singing anything. If you feel that you will be pressed for time when you pick up you vehicle then ask for a faxed, emailed or mailed copy of your rental agreement so that you can look it over before picking up your rental.
