While the number of people traveling to and from Heathrow Airport have increased, the hotels space around the airport has not kept up with the growth. Because of the lack of hotel rooms close to the airport, Lord Laidlaw has decided to collaborate with the construction company Rokeby Development on a 70 million pound project that will create two new hotels. Laidlaw, one of Scotland’s richest men, has planned a 600 room hotel connected to Terminal 5 and another hotel close by.

Lord Laidlaw and Rokeby Developments began planning the new hotels after the concern about an under-provision of hotel rooms was expressed. They both believe that upon completion of their projects, the shortage in the area will be addressed. However, more hotels are going to be required once Terminal 5, the first of the two planned hotels, opens due to the number of passengers using the airport. With the completion and full operation of Terminal 5, the problem of the shortage of hotel rooms will be lessened, but not completely solved.

Terminal 5 has great potential to improve many aspects of the area around Heathrow. Not only will there be a potential improvement of infrastructure for the capital as people are able to stay close to the airport, there will also likely be an increase in tourism in the area as people will spend less time traveling to their accommodations and more will have more time to sight see. People coming to London for the 2012 Olympics will likely enjoy staying so close to the airport because of their intention to attend Olympic related events and not travel about the country. These hotels will be a timely addition to address the competitive market that will arise as people travel to London for this event.

London has become the premiere destination for international travelers. Increasingly strong performance levels for hotels due to the record number of travelers coming to the capital in 2006 have topped the previous highs in the late’90s. As there is no projected decrease in the demand for hotel accommodations, Lord Laidlaw and Rokeby Developments are very likely to have great success with the new hotels.

There is little doubt that the new hotels, flights, and Heathrow Airport London parking are going to cause controversy with anti-expansion groups such as HASAN. Because of the need to meet the demands of its customers, the airport must grow in certain areas. For example, if the airport is going to be able to accommodate an extra 80,000 passengers daily, they are going to have to increase amenities like parking.

With the 4.2 billion pound new terminal that opened in March 2008, Heathrow will have the capacity to handle another 30 million passengers per year. This will increase Heathrow’s total number of passengers to about 90 million people per year. The expansion of the airport necessitates expansion in other areas including transportation like trains and buses and additional parking. New hotels that accommodate airport travelers are a vital link in the growth of the airport and the surrounding area.
