The Three Fabulous Lanai Hotels
November 26, 2009 | Leave a Comment
Lanai is one of the smaller and less traveled islands in Hawaii. For much of the 20th century the island was mainly inhabited by locals and employees of the largest pineapple plantation in the world.
When the economics of cultivating pineapples on Lanai collapsed in the early’80s the Dole Company sold most of the land on the island to the Castle & Cook Corporation. The new owner proceeded to transform Lanai into an exclusive tourist destination.
There are three hotels on Lanai: The Four Seasons Resort at Manele Bay, The Four Seasons Lodge at Koele, and the Hotel Lanai. The Resort at Manele Bay is the only Lanai hotel located on the beach and it was built atop the cliffs above the beach. The Lodge at Koele is located near the top of the highest point of elevation on the island and is seated among a pine forest and exotic gardens. Hotel Lanai, located in the heart of Lanai City, was designed to resemble an antiquated plantation style home.
The Four Seasons Resort at Manele Bay is a dazzling visual feast combining Asian and Mediterranean touches with the indigenous beauty of the Hawaiian Islands. The hotel is perched on red lava cliffs above Hulopoe Beach, the nicest beach for swimming, snorkeling, surfing on the island. The Manele Bay is the most sumptuous of the Lanai hotels with its huge hand-painted murals, oriental antiques and exotic gardens.
The Lodge at Koele is located eight miles from the ocean at an elevation of seventeen hundred feet. The hotel is located among the dense forest of Cook Pines and resembles an old colonial hunting lodge. The Four Seasons Lodge at Koele is in fact the biggest wooden structure on Lanai and all of Hawaii. This hotel is easily the most novel of the Lanai hotels.
The Lodge at Koele emits a sophisticated old-world European elegance with its huge stone fireplaces, high-beamed ceilings, over-stuffed furniture and antique rugs. The Lodge is surrounded by rolling hills, sweeping lawns and gardens, and is home to one of two championship golf courses on Lanai, The Experience at Koele.
The oldest of the three hotels is The Hotel Lanai. This hotel was built originally to house the guests and executive employees of the Dole Corporation. The Hotel Lanai was remodeled in’94 and offers its guests a clean and comfortable stay in a plantation style hotel located in the heart of Lanai City.
No matter which Lanai hotel you choose to stay in, one thing is for certain, you will feel right at home with the employees and locals of Lanai. The local folks of Lanai are extremely helpful and accommodating and will be genuinely happy that you chose Lanai as your vacation destination.
