Why Use Online Travel Guides?
December 11, 2009 | Leave a Comment
It’s cheap to buy online travel guides. Most are free or only a few dollars, while paper books are very expensive. Even iPhone apps, some of which are quite pricey, come with lots of added bonuses, like Geolocation, which make them very worthwhile. PDF travel guides range from completely free to a couple of dollars … much cheaper than a $20+ dead-tree edition.
While sending researchers and fact-checkers to various locations is expensive, it’s cheaper to replace the text of an online guide book than to reprint a paper series. This means that online travel guides are likely to be more up-to-date than their offline counterparts. Websites can be updated within hours of walking out of a cafe, whereas a paper guide is likely to take 12 months or more between research and retail.
Online travel guides link to other services. No one publisher can be perfect at everything, and few people want a deluge of information in their travel guide. Guides that give little historical context on the screen can link out and connect you with further information in the form of videos, audio or writing. You just can’t do that on paper! The new technologies allowing more and more accurate and fast augmented reality (like Layar on iPhone) are going to rapidly change the face of travel publishing.
Weight is a serious issue when travelling. Online travel guides are as light as the machine you use to read them, whether that’s a mobile phone or a laptop. This saves both weight and space in your bags, allowing you to pack lighter and still have more information. Walking down a street with a guidebook singles you out as a tourist, but looking into a screen is unlikely to draw attention in any city.
The variety and quality of online travel guides are growing rapidly. Many traditional publishers have been slow to move their information online, fearing the cannibalism of their paper book sales, but now they are rushing to provide downloadable PDFs and smartphone apps. As more independent publishers spring up and large companies put their information online, you’ll be able to find more information, better suited to your needs and at the right price for you.
