Shark cage diving is fast becoming a very popular tourist activity around the world and Cape Town is a prominent destination for it. The region has one of the biggest Great White Shark populations in the world.

The Great White Shark found in this area tends to breach far more than its counterparts in other parts of the world. A breach happens when the shark leaps out of the water while hunting its prey. The shark positions itself below the target and then thrusts up to surprise the prey, in the process leaping out of the water as its momentum carries it upwards.

There are incredible photographs taken by world renowned photographer Chris Fallows who was one of the first photographers to capture a shark leaving the water in full breach. He was able to capture this amazing event by making a cut out seal shape using a carpet and trailing it behind a boat.

Gansbaai, about an hours’ drive from the city, is a popular base for many cage dives. The little village is a gathering place for shark fanatics because it’s the closest harbour to Seal Island where numerous Great Whites hunt Cape Fur seals.

A large population of seals live on this island as it is uninhabited by man and is an ideal space for them to feed, mate and raise their young. These seals form an important part of the Great White Sharks diet. When seals leave or return to the island they have to move through an area that the sharks regularly hunt in. Often the victims are young or wounded seals.

Safety is imperative and new visitors are taken through a day of safety protocols before they are allowed to enter the water in the cage surrounded by sharks. Operators have to undergo strict licensing procedures. Great White Sharks are officially listed as an endangered species and they are treated with respect.

A typical day involves an early morning breakfast followed by a boat trip to Seal Island which is less than an hour away. The boat will circle Seal Island to give all those onboard a view of the tens of thousands of seals that inhabit the island. The skipper will then find a good place to anchor the boat and set up the cage. On a good day the first sharks can arrive in a matter of minutes. Some are curious and circle the area for an hour or more while others stay for only a short time.

Shark cage diving is one of those truly once in a lifetime experiences that should not be missed.
