Cinque Terre Trip
February 9, 2010 | Leave a Comment
Cinque Terre is part of the Liguria region on the west coast of Italy, a harsh and gorgeous part of the Riviera. Cinque Terre literally means “The Five Lands”, comprising the villages of Vernazza, Corniglia, Riomaggiore, Manarola and Monterosso al Mare. The area is a more unusual destination choice than some better known spots in Italy and all the more enjoyable for that.
Natural beauty, steep landscapes, little modern development — this is what the region is known for. Major signs of civilisation are replaced by ancient terraces flowing down the hills to the blue sea below. A Cinque Terre vacation is the perfect way to wander Italy at its best.
The transport system during your vacation will be made up of boats, trains and your own legs as you walk the well-worn paths between villages. This is due to the steep and changing landscape. Transport to Cinque Terre is made up of several different options, depending on where you start from. A train runs from La Spezia to Genoa, while passenger ferries run from places as far as Lerici, Portovenere, La Spezia and Genoa’s Old Harbour.
One thing you must do is walk the trails. For the moderately fit, the hike between the five villages is not too difficult. In fact, the only really difficult stretch is between Vernazza and Monterosso. The other walks are spectacular too, but are easier to handle for those feeling less than 100% fit. The more difficult the trail, the better views and less people, so we suggest walking between all the villages at some point.
There’s a wide variety of food and drink to be tried on your Cinque Terre vacation. As well as the mix of modern and traditional fare, you can drink wine with the maker at several local vineyards. Other things to do include swimming, hiking and cooking classes, while the views — of course — are stunning. Accommodation ranges from Bed and Breakfasts to villa and apartment accommodation.
A Cinque Terre vacation has been featured on the Top Travel Content Europe, which is a great resource for similar “off the beaten track” European vacation suggestions.
